Updated Park Morton Plan Could Begin by End of 2020

Based on information shared at the January 23, 2020, Park Morton Steering Committee Meeting, the plan to redevelop Park Morton is being adjusted to allow redevelopment to move forward while the DC Court of Appeals considers the challenges to the approved Zoning Order for the development’s first phase at the Bruce Monroe site.

The most significant change from the original development plan is that original Phase 2 of the development plan is now targeted as Phase 1 of the plan (see the area outlined in orange below). This area is the location of the planned larger apartment building on Park Road which would replace the currently empty Park Morton Park Road buildings. The construction timeline for this area is currently scheduled for the end of 2020 or the very beginning of 2021 with completion by the end of 2022.

In order for construction to begin, housing needs to be coordinated for some current Park Morton residents who live in other buildings impacted by the construction and a new city street needs to be approved and constructed. The street is necessary both to support the development and to ensure the safety of the residents remaining on site.

The original Phase 1 of Park Morton – at the Bruce Monroe site – has been held up in court following the challenge filed against the approved zoning order by four parties from the 700 blocks of Irving Street and Columbia Rd, NW. In reviewing the docket for the case in December 2019, all materials appear to have been filed and the only outstanding item is a ruling from the judge. It is expected that a ruling could happen in the coming weeks, though appeals cases have no timetable.

Presuming the Court upholds the original Zoning Order, the Bruce Monroe site phase can move forward. It would no longer be considered a separate phase of development, but rather could move forward concurrently with the new Park Road Phase 1 which would speed up the timeline. If, instead, the Court identifies any issues those would have to be addressed prior to construction.

The proposed changes to the phasing of the Park Morton development does not alter the overall plan and will not have an impact on the number of housing units produced. The development still plans to replace the 174 units at Park Morton with 545 mixed-income units. Park Morton residents have a guaranteed right to continue living at Park Morton in a new replacement apartment. There are also plans being reviewed to make homeownership an opportunity for Park Morton residents to pursue – though the exact number has not yet been determined.

BrainSnacs: This vendor joined us last week and due to their success, will be back this weekend. BRAINSNAC was started by three sisters with a passion for healthy food and a healthy lifestyle. They wanted to create something that would not only instill the values of eating well and reinforce the importance of treating one’s body right, but would also be super convenient.

Calvert Farm was unfortunately iced in last week due to the bad weather. This weekend is looking to be a beautiful weekend! They will provide a lot of vegetables and herbs! These will include arugula, beets, brussel sprouts, carrots, ginger, herbs, kale, lettuce green and red, mushrooms white, mushroom crimini, mushrooms shitake, onion red and yellow, parsnips, potatoes red and yukon gold, potatoes sweet, radish, rutabaga, salad mix, scallion, shallots, spinach, squash winter, swiss chard, turnips and more.

King Mushrooms will offer the freshest mushrooms from their farm on Maryland's Eastern Shore.

Potomac Sweets was unable to make it last week and will attend the market for the first time this weekend. They will provide 32 % butter croissants made with butter produced in Pennsylvania, an expanded variety of specialty Belgian waffles and a wide variety of tea cookies.

Updates from the Compost Crew
We were excited to see the great demand for compost. As a result we ordered another bin. It will not arrive until next week, in time for the February 2 market. This weekend we will only have one bin and it will be first come first serve. Click here to learn what is acceptable compost.

Petworth Citizen closing in February, and Loyalty Bookstore will take over the space

After six years, Petworth Citizen will close its doors on February 1st, according to owner Paul Ruppert. 

“Over the years we’ve been proud to be a gathering spot for our neighbors, who became our friends," says Ruppert. "I am sad to see the end, but am excited about what is coming next. I am grateful to the Petworth community for all of the support of Petworth Citizen over the years.”

But it's not all bad news. Petworth News reports that neighboring Loyalty Bookstore is planning to takeover the space to create a larger restaurant, bookstore, and bar. Owner Hannah Oliver Depp plans to merge 829 & 827 Upshur storefronts into a unique literary and dining space, merging many aspects of the two businesses. 

“We’re rethinking the 829 and 827 spaces,” Depp said. “My dream concept is a bookstore / bar. It’s been done before, but we’re hoping for something more fluid and integrated and less partitioned out with ‘this space is for books, this space is for the bar,’ that kind of thing. Our plan is for Loyalty to have an integrated concept with the new restaurant and bar. More like an expanded version of the Reading Room, mixing programming with the bar.”

Citizen's Paul Ruppert tells the DCist that the concrete designs for the project are still in the works, but that the restaurant will feature new food and drink. He promises that “books will be a part of it all,” and Petworth News reports that Citizen’s mixologist Chantal Tsang will continue her long-running Literary Cocktails series in the new space.

While we are sad to see Petworth Citizen go, we are excited to see what Depp will bring to the neighborhood!

Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service is this Monday and if you are looking for an opportunity to give back to your community, stop by the Ward 1 Tutoring & Mentoring Volunteer Fair this Saturday!

Two out of three DC students are reading below grade level and while we are seeing improvement, there is still a tremendous amount of work that needs to be done to help students master these skills. Beyond reading, there are many other needs our students face that aren’t just academic and that can be better met through one-on-one engagement with a supportive, consistent, and trusted adult. 

I am inspired by the energy and willingness of all of the residents I meet who want to volunteer, and I am confident we can reverse this trend. If only 5-10% of adults get involved, we can transform the lives of many kids in our community; and with more individualized support, we will make a difference that will empower our young people to become the next generation of engaged citizens and future leaders.

Lou's City Bar Winter Beer Garden Grand Opening this weekend!


Lou's City Bar has transformed their outdoor patio into a heated Winter Beer Garden, opening today (Friday, Jan 10th). 
The Winter Beer Garden is fully enclosed, heated, and pet friendly, with outdoor TVs and their patio bar.

Lou's will be holding launch events all month with different breweries during the NFL playoffs, starting with a Port City takeover today through the weekend and followed by Heavy Seas next weekend and Bell’s the following. 


The Port City event kicks off today at 4pm and runs through closing Sunday with specials on a selection of drafts, bottles, and cans both inside and out, including 9oz pours for $4.75 and 16oz pours for $6.50. Check out the Facebook Event for additional details.

Neighborhood staple DC Reynolds is closing its doors after 8 years

DC Reynolds has confirmed that the rumors are true - after eight years, the neighborhood staple is officially closing its doors this April. Here is the note from the owners: 

“Our lease is up and as per usual landlord expectations for rent surpass what we’re comfortable with.

April 2020 will be the end of the run for DC Reynolds. Since March 17th 2012 we’ve opened our doors every single day to our neighbors, friends, and industry colleagues.

Multiple times we had the fortune of being nominated for something nice. Great neighborhood bar, best chili, and of course BOGO Happy Hour.

We look forward to being able to serve everyone into early spring patio season. We’ve got a few plans for our final weeks that we will reveal as we get closer. In the mean time we’ll open at 11am everyday and continue to BOGO 6 days a week.

Fun fact, it is possible to stay after BOGO ends and still have a good time

According to the owners, there are currently no plans to move locations. And the reactions have been pretty universally bummed. 



We reached out to the building owners to get their input and we will keep you updated as we learn more. In the meantime, plan your BOGO happy hours while you can!

ANC 1A to vote on 2020 DC Comp Plan tomorrow, Jan 8th

All neighborhoods and residents have until the end of January to submit their revisions to the DC Comprehensive Plan, the long-term framework for growth and development in the District. The Comp Plan covers everything from changing District boundaries, to increasing affordable housing access, to developing a better transportation network.
