Beware, package thieves hitting 1400 block of Oak, 1300 block of Spring, others?

I've heard from a few folks lately who have been having problems with packages either going missing from outside their homes or being torn open -- so be careful if you're getting things delivered.

If you've had this happen, please call the police, and let us know in the comments the (general) area. I plan to get in touch with someone at DC Government too.

Here's an email from one reader, and I've also heard of packages simply disappearing from the 1300 block of Spring Rd NW.
I'd like to flag that there are package thieves making the rounds on the 1400 block of Oak St. NW. Our guess is that they are trailing the UPS trucks, as they seem to have stolen packages from multiple addresses, torn apart the boxes, stolen the items inside, and then discarded the boxes in a heap on the street. Please remind people to be vigilant, especially as package volume picks up during the holidays. We've also alerted the police.
One option, if you can, would be the get the packages sent to your work or to a place like FedEx Office (RIP Kinkos.) Or does anyone else have any suggestions?

I saw one of the thieves the other day. He was one of the drunks making the rounds on 14th.

I first heard some strange noise by the alley next to my house and looked out the window to find the thief opening a box, finding some kind of vitamins container and pocketing it.

Since I recently lost my phone I had no other choice but to run down 14th hoping to flag one of the patrolling units.

After finding 2 of this units empty I was able to flag down a car who after going around the block found the guy.

He had the vitamins container but since they "didn't see him", they complained, they couldn't lock him up. They obviously knew he had been stolen stuff but for whatever reason they couldn't do anything about it.

I'll be in the lookout and this time I plan on recording the incident to have further proof since it seems as if that's what the police needs now.

I had a package stolen from my porch last Saturday afternoon. I live on Parkwood Pl. NW between 14th St. and Holmead Pl.

They have hit Monroe St. This has been an ongoing issue since the summer. A few folks on our block use the UPS store next to what was the Ruby Tuesday. One thing that I think helps is our fence. We try to keep the gate closed and have had no issues. I think there is something about having the fence that deters a little, but its certainly no guarantee.

We've had problems on the 1400 block of Columbia Road as well.

The REAL story is why the cops refuse to do anything. They either blame the victims for being so presumptuous for having a package delivers during the day or refuse to show up and say they'll keep an eye out. Heck, we've had video surveillance and they still can't catch the criminals. And it's not just package thiefs. There have been numerous assaults and break-in's around Spring Rd and 13th... Where are the cops and why don't they do their jobs? MPD 4 is the worst... No arrests and the neighborhood seems to accept criminal activity as "ok" shameful.

Since moving to the Petworth neighborhood a few weeks ago we've had several shipments stolen from our front porch. Recently brought to our attention, there have been quite a few a few break-ins during the day while people are away.
We're near Grant Circle, hopefully all neighbors will keep an eye outside and alert DCPD for any suspicious activity.

3 packages stolen in last month from 1300 block of Otis between Otis and Holmead. In one case thieves left an empty box. In others they kept the box and its contents (iPhone 6 and medical supplies).

We have had several packages stolen on Irving Street btw 13th and 14th NW. It seems a common trend around here.

I had a package stolen from my porch last Tuesday morning, on 14th and Newton. I have to redo some Christmas shopping. Grrrrr

It's clear there is a coordinated effort by criminals to steal packages. Do they follow around UPS and FedEx trucks? What the hell are the cops doing? You'd think they could plan some trackers in a package and catch these people.

I've had at least one package stolen from 14th and Oak in the last three weeks, but lots of others delivered with no problems. Not sure that the situation is.
