Trader Joe's at 14th and T is now open!

So it's not technically in our neighborhood, but I plan to go all the time. The grocery store, which sells lots of packaged meals and quality store brand stuff, is finally here.

Are you excited? I hope it makes Giant less crowded.

I don't much like Trader Joe's - aside from pre-made stuff, they just aren't that interesting as a grocery store. I'm more excited that they've started repaving 14th Street.

Gotta disagree, Jon. We do basically all our weekly grocery shopping there and really welcome this new location in the District!
We do all our cooking from scratch, though, so maybe what we're looking for in a store is different than your needs.

No way will this reduce the crowd at Giant or Target. If anything the crowds will be similar there and insane at TJs.

Never the less, I'm glad to see a location closer then Foggy Bottom because going there and then waiting 45 minutes to checkout isn't my ideal way to spend an evening.

@Mike Henry - my experience with Trader Joes's is that they don't have much with which to cook from scratch. Maybe I'm wrong - I haven't been there in a while. But my impression is that they're really good for pre-made stuff and not much on fresh vegetables, for example.

I don't object to the store being there, but I don't expect to go.

Super excited about this.

@Jon - I cook a lot as well and like shopping at Trader Joe's. It really depends on what you're looking for, but I like going there for Greek yogurt (much cheaper than other stores), cheese, rice, pasta, peanut butter, wine/beer, coffee, and sauces. Overall their produce isn't great, but the prices on avocados and bananas are usually decent, and seasonal produce is usually pretty good (I like when they have a "local" stand set up). I do like their mini heirloom tomatoes, which I only recently have started to see in other stores.

Overall, when I go to a traditional grocery store I wind up with a bunch of extra unhealthy and processed items in my basket. When I go to Trader Joe's I wind up with grains, fruit, and vegetables (i.e. what I should be eating). I love their processed foods, but for some reason I'm able to resist them.

Love Trader Joe's and so excited for this opening. I cook a lot and make smoothies and salads and I get almost all of my ingredients at TJ's. They have amazing non-dairy milk, coconut water, frozen fruits, their bagged spinach is amazing. And second the seasonal produce. Super cheap prices on tofu, cheeses, wines. I'm sure this place is going to be mobbed all the time though. Will likely still go to NoVA for grocery shopping at TJ's.

I visited the store this weekend and was pleasantly surprised by their fresh produce selection! While they still lack a large variety of herbs, they had all the fresh fruits and veggies I was looking for. Plus, they have free parking and LOTS of check-out lanes. Good addition to the area and hopefully it eases congestion at Giant a little!
