Porch collapses at 1021 Monroe St NW, closes street

This is weird. WTOP reports that a porch on the 1000 block of Monroe collapsed this morning, and the firefighter's union Twitter confirms that it was 1021 Monroe. The collapse closed the street for a while.

WTOP says the house was empty at the time, and I'm not sure if this house is vacant -- it wasn't on last year's vacant property list.

This collapse, combined with the fire at 1327 Girard, really makes me think that people need to make sure their houses are in good shape. The collapse and the fire didn't injure anybody, but imagine if they had, or if the fire had spread to other neighboring buildings. One crummy house can cause a lot of damage to other houses. Of course, maybe there were extenuating circumstances, but still, it's good to keep an eye out.

You can report unsafe structures at 311.dc.gov.
