Petworth Farmers Market opens Friday, May 4

More farmers market news! The Petworth Market, which runs every Friday from 4 to 8 pm at 9th between Upshur and Georgia, is open! Here's their press release about it:

Opening Day: May 4

The Petworth Community Market starts TOMORROW, Friday, May 4! Come out for the traditional celebratory watermelon cutting at 4 p.m., then shop fresh produce and local products to your heart’s content. What’s new at the market this year?
  • Expanded season: Due to input from customers and vendors last year, the market season has been extended for an additional month.
  • Expanded Bonus Dollars Program: Once again, the Petworth market will accept SNAP/WIC benefits and offer a Bonus Dollars program. Those who spend $10 or more in SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program -- formerly food stamps) will receive $10 in Bonus Dollars from PCM. The expanded offering is thanks to our successful fundraiser bash at Domku last week, as well as a contribution from the Ward 4 Constituent Services Fund courtesy of Councilmember Muriel Bowser!
  • More Music: The Final Friday of each month will feature special musical performances to bring out families and neighbors.
  • Kids Corner: A designated space with activities for the little ones.
  • More Vendors: Nearly 20 vendors (see below) will sell their wares and food products at the market.
Now in its third season, the Petworth Community Market (PCM) runs Fridays, 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., from May 4 through October 26. This Friday, May 4, visit the market on Ninth Street between Upshur Street and Georgia Avenue with neighbors, Advisory Neighborhood Commissioners and key partners to help ring in the market’s opening at 4 p.m. in style. The opening will feature a watermelon cutting and entertainment provided by local musicians Brian Fenke (4-6pm) and Eminence Band (6-8pm), so bring your dancing shoes! Credit cards are accepted at the market.

Many thanks to those who supported the market through silent auction items, attending the fundraiser and spreading the word. Thanks to the fundraiser, the PCM Board was able to expand our Bonus Dollars Program (see above for details). A special thanks to Domku owner Kera Carpenter for hosting, and to Councilmember Muriel Bowser for lending her financial support to the Petworth Community Market through a grant, and for attending the event last week.

Thank you to everyone that has expressed interest in making the market thrive and those who joined us at our Volunteer Event on March 28th. The creative energy we’ve encountered will surely make this season like no other, and we are excited about all of the potential. If you are interested in getting the word out about the market or helping with a number of other great projects, please fill out this form or email Brooke. No special skills are required, other than a willingness to help.
