The Carodozo track is closed to the public for 18 months

I recently received some questions from people asking about Cardozo's track, which used to be open to the public. However, during the school's renovations, it will be closed for about 18 months, according to Jim Graham.

Runners, where else would you recommend? The track at Banneker looks nice.

The track at Bannecker is really nice-- it's lit and it's 400 meters, despite the odd square-like shape. I used it many times during marathon training when I had to get in some track intervals and my schedule didn't allow me to use Cardozo during the normal hours/days open. Especially this past summer.

For Bannecker you just have to be willing to have a chill attitude and swerve around people that don't know track etiquette.... people walking with strollers in lane 1, people walking their dogs on the track, kids playing and throwing stuff onto the track on occasion. I don't mind, and am glad to see people in the neighborhood using the track and out getting exercise, even if they are clueless about track etiquette. As long as you're not anal about that kind of thing, Bannecker's track's great.

where is the Bannecker Track exactly?

Banneker is on 9th St NW just south of Euclid. Here are directions to banneker from Cardozo. I agree with Greta, you've got to be chill, because there are lots of hangers-out. And I hope you don't mind a little pot smoke blown in your face... :-/

Anyone know what hours it is open and when the lights are on?

@Anonymous-- I've never been there when it hasn't been open and lit (I've been there as late as 9pm in the summer, I'm sure). Not sure if there are hours that people aren't supposed to be there, as I haven't noticed any posted hours, and I don't think there's a gate around the track to keep people out anyways...I could be wrong though. I'll check it out more closely the next time I go.

I walked by Banneker this morning about 9 am and it was open. I'm trying to track down more info.

I was down there a few weeks ago and left a long sleeve shirt on the stairs which somehow was taking jogging inbetween intervals on the track. I was impressed. It might have been the homeless guy who was walking away when I got back but I figured if he was hiding it in his pants it was his to keep.

I had a friend when we were doing a hill workout hide his shoes in a bush next to the bottom and his shoes were still stolen, once again, impressive.
