Big boom last night about 1 am?

Last night around 1 am I heard a really loud sound -- it was sort of like thunder, but much louder and more sudden, and seemed to last for 10 seconds. I went onto Twitter and saw lots of other people heard it -- some folks said they were woken up and others said car alarms were set off in Bloomingdale and Shaw. It seemed awfully loud and long for thunder, and I was pretty disconcerted.

Anybody else hear it? Any idea what it was? To me it sounded like it came from the west, but that might just be due to my windows.

  1. That was clearly thunder! It was just right overhead.

  2. It didn't sound much like thunder to me but I can't think of anything else it could have been. At the time, I thought the house behind us collapsed.

  4. I thought the end was coming when I heard it. It sounded like thunder to me, but then it kept going and going and I was waiting for the wall of fire to engulf my apartment building.

  5. Definitely thunder. There was a very bright lightning flash about 10 seconds prior.

  6. That was thunder I never heard before! I was still up catching up on some reality tv after a night out to see Erasure at 9:30 club. Sat in my den with a bit of trepidation that the follow up sound would come from the roar from fire engines.

  7. I think it was thunder--there was REALLY bright lightening before it happened.
And it did start in the west and move to the east. (Which I know because of my bedroom windows? :) )

  9. I think I was witness as well. I do remember catching one surprisingly bright flash out my window, and then a few seconds later was an exceptionally loud crack of apparently thunder. (If it was something else, much closer, the sound would of course have followed much sooner.)
