The other day I stumbled onto something random: there's a hostel, the DC Trekker, in our neighborhood, at 1422 Harvard Street NW. Kind of interesting, in that I'm not familiar with any other hostels in DC, except one on 11th Street downtown.
The place seems to be pretty new, insofar as most of the reviews are from 2010 or later and I haven't heard about it before. It's dormitory style (bunk beds) with rates at about $40 amonth night. And if you think about it, it's a good spot for a hostel -- near the Metro, bars and restaurants, and shopping. They also rent weekly and monthly.
Might be a good place for friends in town and you don't want them messing up your house. Let's hope this stuff doesn't happen there.
There's also a "bed and basket" in the neighborhood that I've written about before, the Asante Sana.

I would think it would have to be $40 a night rather than per month as you wrote.
You're right, thanks.
It used to be a halfway house for pregnant women in drug recovery - I worked there in the 90s.
There is also another hostel further up 14th Street near Spring Road.
