11th and Park dog park to be closed for renovation

If you walk your dog at the park at 11th and Park Road, you'll need to find another spot come September 27th. WMATA is closing the park until October 15 for construction -- not sure exactly what's going on there, hopefully some more grass? It's basically just dirt now.

They will be removing the environmental monitoring equipment and cleaning up that area of the park, which will create a bit more useable space. Nothing beyond that at this time. Hopefully there will be an improved surface installed at a later date, but nothing is imminent on that front.

I wonder how long it will be after this renovation before it's filled with dog crap again?

I can't use that park, it's too gross. I always end up driving pooch down to 11th and Rhode Island where the people seem to be able to clean up after themselves, even as there are many more of them.

People who use this park don't clean up after their dogs. It smells awful, you can smell it from Red Rock Pizza across the street. The grass is long gone. It's an ugly disgusting nuisance now. And it's not even a real park. It's a nudge nudge wink wink kinda thing. City or Metro who owns it should just shut it down.

I agree that the park needs improvement, both in terms of physical space and how owners police themselves. For a place that is heavily used, however, I think shutting it down wouldn't be the best solution. There is a Facebook page for the group, perhaps folks could work together for more regular clean-ups / self-policing and, in the long run, band together to push for some investment by the city to make this space more useable:

You should start a campaign like the one they have in cambridge to update this park. http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5iIPiDodHVDL7z-6LmrfwPCPHeWjgD9ICSTGG0

Use the dog poop to help light Columbia Heights! Maybe Fenty could get the ball rolling before he be gone.

I don't know what you people are talking about! The park is great.

Maintenance of the Park is supposed to be the responsiblity of NCHCA and the users. The habits of some of the users of this Park are really no better than some of the 11th Monroe Park that some complain so much about.

Hi, I'm thinking about moving to the neighborhood of this park. Does anyone know if there is a dog daycare (working day or per hour) service in the area? Planet Pet is the closest from what I can tell (Florida and V) but that's a 30 min walk away... Thanks!

Meridian Park Veterinary Hospital: keep up the good work we need renovations at many dog parks in our area as well.
