More pizza pool! RedRocks vs Monterey's

Another Columbia Heights pizza joint is in Washingtonian's Pizza Pool, this time it's RedRocks Pizzeria at 11th and Park vs some place called Monterey's in Alexandria. Vote here! Voting closes at 3 pm on Wednesday.

Earlier, Pete's New Haven Apizza knocked off suburban staple Ledo's. Could it be an all-Columbia Heights final?

I'll vote for anything other than Red Rocks. Some of the worst pizza I've ever had. Soggy crust that just drops all the toppings (sparse and subpar) off the pie. Mediocre service and a sports bar atmosphere inside. I don't care about their oven or fancy flour if it doesn't result in a quality pizza.

You should try them again. Its uneven which IS a problem, but when you get them at their best, its the best. Also, I would recommend you only try their margerita, as most of the others now have started having TOO many toppings (in an apparent attempt to kiss the average american-taste-ass, unfortunately) leaving the center soggy.

Yeah, the margarita is classic.

Oh yeah... also, "sports bar atmosphere?" Are you sure you went to the right place?

The inside has an obnoxiously loud tv playing sports (at the time we were there). Is it not possible to have a nicely done bar WITHOUT a tv? Also, I'm just done with trying these wood fired oven pizza joints that have no idea what they're doing (RR, Matchbox, 2 Amys, etc). If they knew how to properly bake a pizza to keep the top and bottom equally charred (one thing I pleasantly experienced at Co. in NYC), then perhaps their ridiculous prices would be worth it. Paradiso does it with pretty good consistency, unfortunately, the rest can't.

Btw, have you tried Moroni Brothers on Georgia Ave (great modern Indian place right next to it called Fusion as well)? Obviously, that too you need to eat on site (delivered is just not the same). Very similar to Paradiso, not quite as good perhaps (the owners work/worked at Paradiso for a long time).

I agree on the TV being too lound at Pete's sometimes. You should ask them to turn it down though (although, I think they kinda advertise that they show football on Sundays so some other patrons might object).

I've never been in red rocks when the tv sound is on and I go in all the time. I love the place. It does get loud inside, but not from the tv.
