Summer jobs for youth prorgam starting soon

The city's Summer Youth Employment Program is starting up again, and while it's had some problems, it can still give young people some work experience and give them something constructive to do in the lazy summer months.

Here's more info on the program, which places kids in various jobs, from art to environment to construction to education. The kids who painted the mural on Kenyon Street were Summer Youth Employment kids, for example, and all participants get paid the Federal minimum wage.

And for those kids too young for the jobs program, the city has a Summer Fun program too.

What a waste of my tax money. Like these kids can't do what normal children do in the burbs or other areas. You know, like actually apply for jobs at McDonald's and Wendy's. I would much rather have lower taxes then give my future mugger a paycheck to hardly work a menial government job. Or, if last year is any indication, possibly do know work at all.

Why do these kids not make DC minimum wage which is $1.00 higher than federal minimum wage. Aren't they undermining their own laws? Are they saying that it is better to have more people working for less than to have less people working for more? It sounds like they are just bribing the kids not to get in trouble.

Either pay them DC minimum wage because they are actually doing valuable work for the community, or pay them $4/hour to sit in a locked library all day. I would be fine either way.

Anon, I think the idea is they'll get trained for an actual career, rather than just flip burgers.

To MandZazz, why would these teens need a higher wage? If they are trying to support a family, there are much higher paying jobs out there, but you actually have to work to get them. The more kids you get off the streets, the better this neighborhood will be. Hey, maybe they'll learn something outside of the music lyrics they listen to, or the crap on tv.

we get a bunch of these kids and they should not get paid at all! I have never seen so many dumb kids. None of them wrote above a third grade level. A lot never showed up after the first day. A few got into fist fights right in the office. They use terrbile langauge. It was the most hopeless thing I have ever witnessed. My plan now is to just try to avoid them all summer.
